Many of my clients and visitors to my website have asked about the Cat on the Beach photo.  Yes, I'm happy to say, the cat is mine.  Puddin' is just one of many pets I share my home with each day.

A few years ago I volunteered at Horry County Humane Society in Conway, South Carolina.  I was then hired part-time at the shelter.  Puddin' was there to greet me each morning.  His cage was in the lobby of the shelter.  However, each morning before the doors opened to the public, Puddin' was let out of his cage and could wander around the lobby and Adoption Center.  At that time I was helping out with Adoptions so Puddin' often stayed by me until the doors opened.  We didn't have to worry about him going out the doors because he seemed to be afraid of the outdoors.

Puddin' is a medium haired cat of unspecified age.  He is very friendly and has a sweet personality.  I couldn't understand why nobody adopted him.  Other workers at the shelter felt that Adoptees believed he had it better than the other cats because his cage was bigger and he had interaction with everyone who came to visit the shelter.  That's true, but he had been at the shelter at least six months by the time I left the shelter.  When I decided I needed to work full-time in real estate, I adopted Puddin' so that I could take him with me.

Puddin' is the one pet who gets along with all of my other animals - dogs, cats and birds.  He is still mischievious.  He loves to bat small items on the kitchen counter for my dogs to chew up.

One week when my sister Pat Ferdinandi came to visit she took a photo of Puddin'.  At the time I was developing my website.  Pat, as creator of Scarlet's Feathers, greeting cards with Parrot themes had experience working with PhotoShop.  Pat also has a computer background.  Therefore, I let her put create the photos for my website banner.  As a joke, she PhotoShopped Puddin' on the Beach.  She also put Puddin' on a mailbox.  I liked the photo so much I decided to add it to my website and as my identification photo on Twitter and Facebook.

That's the story behind the cat on the beach.  Thankfully, Puddin' is heallthy and mischievious as ever and I'm so lucky to have him.

Important Plea:

Please Spay and Neuter all of your pets.  I now volunteer en as I can at Grand Strand Humane Society in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with many of my former workers from HCHS.  When I was there last time, there were over 100 cats.  It's heartbreaking watching kittens grow up in tiny cages because there are so many unwanted cats.  If you have room, a cat or dog can add tons of love to your home.  They are companions that love you unconditionally.

Residents of Myrtle Beach and Conway are often unable to take their pets with them because of tough economic times. The high number of Foreclosures and short sales, has increased the number of pets left behind. They wind up in shelters.  Please, please don't just let your pet loose when you're moving or abandon them to fend for themselves. (That's how I got my dog--Taffy.  He was just left in the apartment with no food or water when her owner moved).  The shelter personnel are very understanding and will try their best to match your pet to the right forever home.  The more information you can provide shelter personnel about your pet the better.  Bring in records of vaccinations (so your pet doesn't have to have unnecessary shots) and explain a bit about your pet's personality.  This helps ensure that the right owner adopts your pet.  Times are tough and the shelter personnel understand.

Sandra Brown is the current President of the Grand Strand Humane Society.  The humane society is located in the heart of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (Behind Myrtle Waves)  and it does a wonderful job trying to relocate pets and avoiding euthanasia at all costs.  The society recently flew two older dogs up north through a special program and found a wonderful ranch-type home in Florida to take many of the cats.  This all takes money.  If you can't adopt, please donate to the Grand Strand Humane Society.  If you just purchased a new home, why not bring a pet into your home.   I've adopted 3 animals since moving to South Carolina.  You can contact the shelter at:   cara@grandstrandhumanesociety.com  I could not be prouder of the work done at Grand Strand Humane Society in Myrtle Beach
