Improve Your Home’s Curb Appeal in 10 Easy and Inexpensive Steps
A potential buyer’s first impression of your home may be their last. If you want to get potential buyer’s through the door, your home needs Curb Appeal. There are 10 Easy and Inexpensive Steps you can take to improve the Curb Appeal of your home.
- FRONT DOOR: Paint is an inexpensive way to create an inviting front entrance. Paint the door a color that fits the style of your home. Make it stand out. If your home is white, paint the door a bold red or deep black.
- SHUTTERS: Although the front door does not have to match the shutters, it is generally recommended because it creates symmetry.
- LIGHTING: It doesn’t help to have a beautiful home if no one can see it. Make sure the front of your home is well lit. Spruce up those entry lights by adding new bulbs. If the fixtures are metal, polish them so they gleam. If they can’t be polished, give them a fresh coat of paint. Add up-lighting around your garden to enhance special features. Replace all bulbs so that they are working at top performance.
- HOUSE NUMBERS: Potential buyers should be able to clearly read the address of your home. Don’t paint them the same color as your home. Select numbers that are large enough to read from the curb.
- PLANTS: Are your plants more dead than alive? Do the weeds outnumber your plants? Spend a little time weeding your garden. If you don’t have a green thumb, replace any dead plants with relatively maintenance-free plants. A potential buyer may not want the hassle of maintaining a lush garden or fixing a garden that is filled with weeds and dead plants. Use container plants for a touch of color.
- POWER -WASH EXTERIOR: Powerwash the sidewalks, driveway, roof and exterior walls. Power-washing not only gets rid of dirt and grime, it can also help get rid of mold and mildew. Potential buyers will consider the condition of the roof. Power-washing can take years off the appearance of the roof.
- WINDOWS: Wash all of the exterior windows until they sparkle—inside and out.
- LAWN: Cut the lawn. This may sound simple, but overgrown lawns give the appearance the owner does not take care of the home. If the home is vacant, hire someone to cut the lawn. Edging the lawn will enhance the appearance of your home.
- SHRUBS: Trim all shrubs. Don’t worry about shaping them. As long as they look neat instead of overgrown, they will add to the curb appeal. Be sure they are not overwhelming the front of the home. The general rule is to keep front yard shrubs below the height of the windows.
- CLUTTER: Put away all unnecessary items in the yard. Depersonalize the space.
Keep in mind that you want the potential buyers to envision themselves in the house. Don’t think of the house as your home, but rather what you can do to get the money you want from the house. Walk across the street and look at the front of the house with an objective eye. Ask a neighbor’s opinion about the Curb Appeal. The purpose of sprucing up the front of your home is to create such a positive First Impression that the potential buyer wants to walk through the front door to take a second look.
